Mackey Says County Should Prepare for "Major, Major School Construction"

With the influx of a host of new residents associated with the $1 billion Volkswagen plant, the County Commission should brace itself for requests from the County Schools for "major, major school construction," Commissioner Warren Mackey said.

Commissioner Mackey, who heads the commission's education committee, said school officials are making plans for six new school buildings and numerous modifications to existing buildings.

Mackey Says Harrison, Hillcrest Schools Should Close

Hamilton County Commissioner Warren Mackey says the time is right to close two Highway 58-area schools and "enhance" another nearby school.

Dr. Mackey, who represents District 4, says Harrison and Hillcrest Elementary schools are "aging, dilapidated and in need of replacement." He says "With the economy the way it is now, it doesn't make sense to keep them open, or to replace them."

He uggests an expansion of Lakeside Academy, a K-5 school locoated between Harrison and Hillcrest on Highway 58. Harrison was built in 1939 and Hillcrest in 1948. Lakeside is the newest of the three, built in 1959.


Commissioner Warns: "Proceed Carefully with School Closings."

Hamilton County Commissioner Warren Mackey sent out a news release late Friday encouraging Supt. Jim Scales and the school board to "proceed carefully, responsibly and effectively" on the issue of school closings and reorganizations in his district. He says all the commissioners have read the funding report and feel the schools have adequate funding.


Dr. Mackey doesn't just talk about getting involved in his community ... he IS involved, even donating his own money to help where he can.
