Diversity Matters

Diversity matters (1).png

We need to take a moment to recognize that the process of selection of the chair of the county commission is not and has never been a practice that empowers a just, inclusive or equitable community.

During my time on the Hamilton County commission, I have seen the commission elect exclusively white, republican chairs.

Now maybe our community members don’t think this is a very important position and maybe the commission members on the dias insinuate that it doesn’t matter, but let me tell you, it matters.

It matters that the chair embodies the values, policies and practices that matter to ALL people, especially those that have been historically underrepresented.

By allowing the selection of the chair to be a partisan decision, we are doing a disservice to its citizens.

Let’s make the board of the county commission a fair party or non-partisan entity allowing us to work as a community building bridges and ending the disparities present within our communities.

I offer three solutions:

  1. Have the minority party represented on the board elect the chair of the commission. This evens the playing field for everyone.

  2. Remove party criteria from the election process of the chairperson, just like the school board.

  3. Remove party criteria from the election process of the county commission, just like the school board.

It’s time to diversify the chair position to more fully represent ALL citizens of Hamilton County.

I will make a motion to change the future process for the election of chairperson for the Hamilton County Commission.

I want to hear from you. How would you shape economic development in Hamilton County? Send me your comments and concerns by using this contact form.
